I woke up this morning around 7am anxiously awaiting the Inaugural Day festivities and shortly after found tears making their way down my cheeks and onto my bedspread - history was being made in front of my own eyes. Monday morning I was in San Diego attending the 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr.All People's Breakfast and again realized the magnitude of this historic event.
Here I was, an ambitious 22-year-old journalist, sitting at my table fighting back tears of joy, pain, and happiness as I listened to speakers from around the country talk about how far we've come, how much farther we need to go, and what we can do to get there. Monday's breakfast replayed over and over in my mind as I watched Barack Obama being sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. From this day on, I can truly tell people they can be ANYTHING they want to be and really mean it.
I look forward to the day that I have children and grandchildren and to be able to look them in the eyes and tell them the exact same thing. To all of the A Day in the Life of DeJuan readers from across the globe, thank you for allowing me to be who I am today with no reservations. My President is Black and I shall forever remember the events that transpired up to and including today and join all of you in welcoming Barack Obama as our 44th President. Welcome, Mr. President!
